Movie Conventions Research: A Quiet Place

What elements of the genre that you chose to base your final task on does this movie have?

The main element of the thriller genre that A Quiet Place has it’s the non-diegetic and diegetic sound. It’s mainly used to show what the characters are heading, and to highlight how quiet the world is, because of how loud those small movements are that we don’t tend to notice. Such as walking or placing down something on a shelf. There’s also non-diegetic sound, which is used to build suspense when there’s climax’s of action. My group will use diegetic and non-diegetic sound to also have this element.

What elements of the genre did the movie have that you like?

In A Quiet Place the monsters that are hunting them are almost never directly shown. They’re shown in blurs and just in sound. You know there is danger, but you don’t know who or what’s behind it. It’s one of the elements my group enjoyed within this movie. It builds the suspense, because you draw your own conclusions and the unknown makes it horrifying. Which is something we plan to do within our movie, to have the main character hunted by an unknown person.

What elements of the genre did the movie have that did not appeal to you?

One of the elements of the thriller genre that was shown in A Quiet Place that did not appeal to my group was the lack of gore. The kills within the movie were shown off-screen almost entirely. The suspense was built in the feeble attempts at getting away, but when the character was caught they were killed off screen. It takes away the statement of the kill and some of the joy of watching the movie. This is not going to be the case within our group. The kill will be a statement, leaving the audience to question who’s next?

Short film reasearch: ( The Last Note/Mystery) Hey blogg. Today we will be discussing an award-winning mystery short film called "The Last Note" and pointing out different features within this film. For some background, the film begins with David driving to lake while taking about leaving his wife and all his problems with her. Then David is seen with a body bag which is Catherine and dumps her in a lake. He does this due to catching ehr cheating on him the night before. Once David returns home, he starts drinking a liquor while reading a book named Murder. In the book, there was a note from Catherine and as he reads to there are flashbacks to her putting posion in the bottle. He then relazies as she write “sorry I had to do this , goodbye David” and he passes away. BLOG 1: Comparing 9, the short film, and the full-length movie Hey Blogg, our group will be discussing the short version of the film "9" and the full-length version along with comparing both of them. Short film version: None of our group members had ever seen this movie and seeing it for the first time it was different, unlike something we had ever seen before. First off, there was no dialogue throughout the whole film. This causes us to pay even more attention to what was happening throughout the film to better understand what was going on. For this specific short film, the plot was less obvious and required higher thinking skills as all that is given are the scenes. We understood the plot at the nearing the end of the movie. Our interpretation of the plot was that in a desolate setting that looked like a landfill site, the film begins with scenes of 9 crafting objects from scrap metal. Critical Reflection Link Critical Reflection A level Media Studies How do your products represent social groups or issues? My short film, Shattered Bonds, represents the major issue of mental health struggles that follow being left out in relationships and friendships, that so many people suffer from in the real world. The film highlights the idea that when you feel a sense of hurt in a relationship/friendship it can cause a mental trigger for coping mechanisms such as violence or self harm. Shattered bonds brings awareness to this through the plot. Throughout the film, there are scenes showing one of the teenage girls being left out of the group and feeling a sense of hurt in the fact that nobody is including her in their conversation or activities. These feelings of hurt then revolve into resentment in the film as they do in the real world. These feelings can lead to violence against others as well as self harm.
